Collection Title: Make Punk Not War

Bio

Madison Kotyra is an apparel and costume designer originally from Rochester, NY now based in Raleigh. She loves all things vintage to inspire her designs; anything retro with a little dust on it is perfect. Maddy also enjoys diving into fashion history and using her personal research as a muse. In the past she has worked as a tailor, costume designer, and a women’s intimates’ designer. Madison plans to use all these past experiences to help her complete her dream collection, Make Punk Not War.

Collection Concept

Make Punk Not War is a post punk inspired collection that is four years in the making. Throughout her education, Madison has conducted personal research into the history of punk and its roots in fashion and activism. This research is the muse to her senior collection. Heavily inspired by designers like Vivienne Westwood and Stella McCartney, Make Punk Not War utilizes classic punk elements combined with the eclectic new wave aesthetic that emerged in the mid 70s to late 80s. Music by Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Smiths, The Cure, Bauhaus, Depeche Mode, Talking Heads, The Velvet Underground, Cocteau Twins, and Joy Division also greatly influence designs created for this collection. Expect exaggerated proportions, layered textures, hints of hardware, and lots of safety pins!
